Web hosting in New Zealand starts at around $4 to $5 a month for a standard website, with managed WordPress a little higher, and VPS or cloud servers costing more as you add dedicated resources. But the monthly figure is only half the story. What actually determines your yearly cost is whether the price includes GST, what it renews at, and how much of the essential stuff (SSL, email, backups, migration) you have to pay extra for. Here’s the full picture.
What you’ll pay, by hosting type
| Hosting type | Our price (GST inclusive) | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared web hosting | from $4.49/mo | Most business websites, blogs, small stores |
| Managed WordPress | from $5.99/mo | WordPress sites that need speed and safety |
| VPS | from $23.99/mo | Developers, custom apps, agencies |
| Cloud servers | from $19.47/mo | Growing sites, apps, traffic spikes |
All prices include GST, and renew at the same price.
Trap #1: the price you compare isn’t always the price you pay
Here’s the one that catches most people out. A lot of New Zealand hosting is advertised excluding GST. The plan looks like $8.25 a month, you budget for $99 a year, and the invoice arrives at $9.49 a month: $113.88. Nothing dishonest has happened; the “+GST” was in the small print. But you compared the wrong number.
Our prices include GST. $4.49 means $4.49. When you’re comparing hosts, the only fair comparison is GST-inclusive against GST-inclusive, so check the fine print on every quote, and add 15% to anything that says “+GST” before you line it up against ours.
Trap #2: the renewal price
The second one is the cheap first term. Hosting is sometimes sold at an introductory rate that renews substantially higher, occasionally double. The first year looks like a bargain; year two is where the provider makes its money, and by then moving feels like too much hassle.
Our hosting renewals stay at the advertised price. What you sign up at is what you keep paying. (Our domains are priced the same way: renewal is the same price as registration, and every domain comes with renewal reminders so the date never sneaks up on you.)
Trap #3: what’s not included
A $5 plan isn’t cheap if the essentials are extras. Before comparing, price the whole setup:
- SSL certificate: free on every one of our plans. Some hosts charge for anything beyond a basic certificate.
- Email: unlimited 10 GB mailboxes are included with us. Elsewhere, professional email is often a per-mailbox monthly add-on.
- Backups: on-demand backups included. Some providers charge a fee to restore your own data.
- CDN: a free global CDN is included with us; it’s frequently a paid upgrade.
- Migration: we move your site across free and do the work for you. Others hand you a guide.
- Website builder: included on our plans.
Add those up on a “cheaper” plan and it often isn’t cheaper. If the lowest possible price is your main filter, our guide to cheap web hosting that stays fast and secure covers what to check first.
What a small business actually spends in a year
Let’s do the real maths on a typical Kiwi business website:
- Essentials hosting: $4.49 × 12 = $53.88/year, GST inclusive
- .co.nz domain: $33/year
- SSL, email, CDN, backups, migration: $0, all included
Total: $86.88 a year to have a professional website online, with email on your own domain, secured and backed up. That’s under $2 a week, and it renews at the same price.
Can you host a website for free in New Zealand?
Technically yes, free hosting exists. It’s rarely a good idea for a business, because you generally pay in other ways: ads injected into your site, a subdomain instead of your own domain, tight bandwidth limits, no real support, and no guarantee your site stays up. For a hobby project, fine. For anything that represents your business or takes payments, the $4.49 version is a better investment than the free one.
How much should a small business budget for hosting?
For most New Zealand small businesses, $50 to $120 a year covers hosting and a domain comfortably. Our Essentials plan plus a .co.nz sits at $86.88. Step up to managed WordPress at $5.99/month if your site runs on WordPress and you’d like staging and StackCache caching. You’d only need VPS or cloud pricing if you’re running custom software or serious traffic, and if you’re not sure which, that’s a two-minute conversation with our support team, not a guess.
When it’s worth paying more
- Your site runs on WordPress and matters to your business → managed WordPress from $5.99/mo adds staging, StackCache caching and 24/7 expert WordPress support. See managed WordPress hosting
- You need control, custom software, or your own OS → a VPS from $23.99/mo gives you full root access and your choice of operating system. See VPS hosting plans
- You’re scaling, or downtime is expensive → cloud servers from $19.47/mo, with tiers that scale up as your traffic grows. See cloud server pricing
The honest summary
Web hosting is cheap. What makes it expensive is the 15% you didn’t budget for, the renewal you didn’t read, and the four “included” features that turned out to be add-ons. Ask any host three questions before you buy: Does that include GST? What does it renew at? What’s genuinely included? Do that, and you’ll never be surprised by a hosting invoice again.
Our answers, for the record: yes, it includes GST. It renews at the same price. And SSL, email, CDN, backups and migration are all included. Compare our web hosting plans
Frequently asked questions
How much does web hosting cost per month in NZ?
Standard shared hosting starts at around $4 to $5 a month. Ours is $4.49/month including GST, with SSL, CDN, email, backups and migration included, and renewals at the same price.
Is cheap web hosting any good?
It can be, as long as the essentials are included and the price doesn’t jump at renewal. Cheap hosting becomes expensive when SSL, email and backups are paid extras, or when the advertised price excludes GST.
Do New Zealand hosting prices include GST?
Not always. Many providers advertise excluding GST and add 15% at checkout. Ours include GST, so the price you see is the price you pay.
How much does a .co.nz domain cost?
Ours is $33/year, and it renews at the same price as registration. For a full breakdown across .nz, .com and other extensions, see our guide to domain name costs and renewal prices in NZ.
What’s the total cost of getting a business website online?
On our Essentials plan with a .co.nz domain: $86.88 a year, GST inclusive, including SSL, email, CDN and backups.
