The best WordPress hosting in New Zealand isn’t the biggest brand. It’s the plan that gives your site speed (server-level caching), safety (staging and backups), room to grow (unlimited bandwidth and a platform that scales with traffic) and honest pricing (GST included, renewals that don’t jump). Here’s how to compare your options.
This guide compares on factors, not brand names. Any host can claim to be the fastest. Very few will tell you what happens when your traffic triples, or what the plan costs in year two. Those are the questions that separate a good WordPress host from a cheap one.
The seven things to compare
Use this as a checklist when you have two or three hosts open in different tabs:
| Factor | What to ask | What our WordPress plans include |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic limits | Is there a cap on monthly visits or bandwidth? What happens if you go over? | Unlimited bandwidth on every plan, autoscaling platform |
| Caching | Is caching built into the server, or do I install and tune a plugin myself? | StackCache, our own caching technology, plus the Website Acceleration Suite |
| Staging | Can I test changes on a copy of the site before they go live? | WordPress staging site and free cloning on every plan |
| SSL | Is SSL free, and does it cover subdomains? | Free SSL, with free wildcard SSL |
| Backups | Can I take and restore a backup myself, at no charge? | On-demand free backups |
| Support | What hours, which channels, and does the team know WordPress? | 24/7/365 expert support |
| Pricing | Does the price include GST? What does it renew at? | From $5.99/month including GST, same price at renewal |
Traffic limits: the comparison point most people miss
Many WordPress hosts cap the number of monthly visits on each plan. Go over and you either get billed for overage or pushed onto a bigger plan, often in the same month your marketing finally worked. The limit is usually on the pricing page, but in small print under the headline features.
Look for three things. Is bandwidth capped? Is there a visit or “traffic” allowance? And is there a limit on inodes, the number of files on your account, which large WordPress media libraries can hit faster than you’d expect?
Our WordPress plans come with unlimited bandwidth and no inode limits, and they run on an autoscaling platform built to absorb traffic spikes, with no single point of failure and a database with built-in redundancy.
Caching: server-level beats plugin-only
WordPress builds each page from PHP and database queries every time someone visits. Caching stores the finished page so the server can hand it out without rebuilding it. On most WordPress sites it’s the biggest single speed improvement you can make.
There are two ways to get it. A caching plugin you install and configure yourself, which works but is easy to misconfigure. Or caching built into the hosting, which is on from day one. Ask any host which one you get.
Ours is StackCache, our own caching technology. It speeds up page loads automatically for every visitor, with nothing to set up. The Website Acceleration Suite adds image resizing and compression, code minification and lazy loading on top.
Staging: test before you break the live site
A plugin update or theme change that breaks your site at 2pm on a Tuesday costs real enquiries. A staging site is a private copy where you test the change first, then push it live with one click when it works.
Some hosts only include staging on their higher tiers. Check that it’s on the plan you’re actually buying. Every one of our WordPress plans includes a staging site and free WordPress cloning, plus a WordPress Manager dashboard for your themes, plugins, users and backups.
Managed WordPress hosting vs standard web hosting: what’s the difference?
Standard shared hosting gives you server space, email and a control panel. It runs WordPress fine, but caching, staging and day-to-day upkeep are your job.
Managed WordPress hosting is built around WordPress itself. You get WordPress-specific caching, staging, management tools and support staff who know WordPress well. It costs a little more, and for a business site it usually pays for itself the first time an update goes wrong.
If you’re running a simple brochure site and are comfortable maintaining it yourself, standard shared web hosting from $4.49/month including GST is a perfectly sensible choice. If the site brings in leads or sales, managed hosting is the safer bet.
Which WordPress hosting plan is right for your site?
Mostly it depends on how many sites you run and how much storage you need. Here are our four plans, all prices GST inclusive:
| Plan | Price | WordPress sites | SSD storage | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MWP Start | $5.99/mo | 1 | 30 GB | Unlimited |
| MWP Plus | $9.99/mo | 3 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| MWP Pro | $14.99/mo | 10 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| MWP Ultra | $19.99/mo | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
A single business site or blog fits MWP Start. Agencies and businesses running several sites get better value from Plus or Pro. Most WordPress sites never need a VPS. You’d only look at one for custom server software or full root access.
How does hosting location affect WordPress speed in NZ?
Latency is the time a request takes to travel from a visitor’s browser to the server and back. Distance adds to it, which is why older hosting advice focused on where the server sits.
For most WordPress sites, the bigger levers now are caching and a CDN. A CDN (content delivery network) stores copies of your images, scripts and stylesheets in many locations and serves each visitor from a nearby one. Caching means the server answers instantly instead of rebuilding the page. Together they remove most of the waiting a visitor actually notices.
Every one of our WordPress plans includes a free Global Premium CDN. Our network uses global data centres and CDN locations, including Sydney and Singapore. Rather than taking any host’s speed claims on trust, run a site they host through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the real numbers.
What security features should a WordPress host offer?
Most attacks on WordPress sites are automated: bots scanning for outdated plugins, weak admin passwords and known exploits. A good host blocks most of it before it reaches your site. The minimum:
- Automatic malware scanning, so injected code gets caught before Google flags your site.
- DDoS protection against floods of junk traffic. Ours is rated at 1 Tbps+.
- A free SSL certificate, so browsers don’t mark your site “Not secure”.
- Backups you can restore yourself, for when something gets through anyway.
Hosting security doesn’t replace good habits. Keep plugins updated (test on staging first), delete ones you don’t use, and use strong, unique admin passwords.
Why backups and SSL are non-negotiable
A backup is your only fix for a botched update, a hacked plugin or a deleted page. What matters is how quickly you can restore it and whether it costs extra. Some hosts charge per restore. Ours include on-demand free backups, so take one before any big change.
SSL does two jobs. It encrypts the connection, protecting logins and form details, and it tells browsers like Google Chrome that your site is genuine. Without it, visitors see a “Not secure” warning and many leave. Every one of our WordPress plans includes a free SSL certificate, and wildcard SSL is free too, so subdomains are covered.
Pricing transparency: GST and renewals
Two practices catch WordPress buyers out across the market. Some hosts show prices before GST, so the checkout total is 15% higher than the advertised figure: a $10.00 plan becomes $11.50. Others use introductory pricing that renews at a much higher rate after the first term.
Ask both questions before you buy, and compare the cost over two or three years. Our WordPress hosting starts at $5.99/month including GST and renews at the same price. For a fuller picture of what hosting should cost, see our breakdown of web hosting prices in New Zealand.
How easy is it to move a WordPress site to a new host?
Plenty of site owners put up with slow hosting because moving sounds risky. Done properly, it isn’t. Ours is free on request. We copy your WordPress files, database and email, build the site on a staging URL, and check it with you before your nameservers are switched, so there’s no downtime. It usually takes 4 to 12 hours.
If you’d rather do it yourself, our step-by-step guide to migrating a website to a new host in NZ covers the full process, including DNS and email.
The short version
- Check traffic limits first. A visit cap can turn a cheap plan into an expensive one in your best month.
- Get caching built in. Server-level caching plus a CDN does more for speed than anything else.
- Insist on staging. On the plan you’re buying, not just the top tier.
- Compare GST-inclusive renewal prices, over two or three years.
- Don’t stay put for fear of moving. A good host migrates you free, without downtime.
If you want all of that in one plan, compare our Managed WordPress Hosting NZ tiers against the checklist above.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between managed WordPress hosting and shared hosting?
Managed WordPress hosting is built for WordPress, with server-level caching, staging sites, WordPress management tools and WordPress-savvy support. Shared hosting is general-purpose: it runs WordPress, but caching, testing and upkeep are mostly up to you.
How do I choose the best WordPress hosting in NZ for my small business?
Compare traffic or visit limits, built-in caching, staging, SSL, backups, support hours and the GST-inclusive renewal price. Then test support with a pre-sales question and check a site the host already runs in Google PageSpeed Insights.
Can I register an NZ domain and get hosting from the same provider?
Yes. We register .nz and .co.nz domains as well as hosting your site, which keeps DNS setup and billing in one place. A .co.nz is $33.00 a year, and you can search for your domain name before you choose a plan.
What does migrating an existing WordPress site involve?
Your WordPress files, database and email are copied to the new host, the site is tested on a staging URL, and DNS or nameservers are then pointed at the new server. Done in that order, there’s no downtime. We do it free on request.
Is cheap WordPress hosting a good option for beginners?
It can be, if the plan still includes caching, SSL, backups and real support. The risk with very cheap plans is what’s missing, and what they renew at. Check both before you sign up.
Do I need an SSL certificate for my WordPress site?
Yes. SSL encrypts logins and form details, browsers warn visitors away from sites without it, and Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. It should be free with your hosting. All our WordPress plans include it.
